Why I Am Thankful

Why I Am Thankful

There are many things I am thankful for:my wife, my children and grandchildren, my salvation, my church family, the work of God in our church this past Sunday, flowers, Wendy’s, etc.  I am grateful for so many things and I desire to share that thankfulness with all who will listen.

Why I am thankful comes from I Corinthians 4:7 – “What do you have that you did not receive?  If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?”  Everything I have…I have received.  It was given to me.  It was given to me by God.  I did not deserve it.  I did not earn it.  I simply received it from the gracious hand of my God.

My breath and therefore my life is a gift from my God.  He breathed into Adam the gift of life and thus my breath is from him.  He formed me in the womb in such a way that I can say with David and that I am fearfully and wonderfully made.  He sustains my life daily by giving me each day and protecting me from thousands of things I will probably never see.

My eternal life is totally a gift from my God.  He chose me before the foundations of the world. He opened my spiritual eyes and heart.  He gave me faith so that I could respond in that faith. He is the author and finisher of my faith.  He began a good work in me and he will complete that work.

He directed and guided my life in such a way that at just the right time in my life I saw a beautiful woman with the character of God and an angelic singing voice.  He allowed her to look past my idiocy and gave her eyes to see that I might have potential as a husband.  She truly was and is a special gift from God to me.  I need to remind myself to treat her as a gift and not a purchase.

Everything I have or will ever have is a gift from God.  I received it all from him. To top it all off he has even worked in my sinful, totally depraved heart in such a way that I am able to be thankful and to express my gratitude to him.  He has even given me my grateful heart!

To God be the glory, great things he has done.
