What Are You Doing Today?

What Are You Doing Today?

What are you doing today?  Working?  Going to the store?  Enjoying vacation?  Just living the dream?  Listen to what Isaiah was doing with his day… “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn…” (Isaiah 61:1-3)  Aren’t those kinds of guys just a little annoying?  You are just trying to survive going to work and they are “binding up the broken hearted”.  It is not annoying that they are rescuing and helping people…it is annoying that they have such a clear picture of what the big picture is for today and what God has called them to do.  It convicts us of our small mindedness for that day.

It is true though.  You are not just going to work…you are opening the prison for those who are bound.  As you work diligently by faith you are demonstrating the fruits of no longer being bound by the world’s rat race. You are displaying the wonderful work God has accomplished in your life.  He has completely changed your goals for work, for marriage, for rearing children…for everything.  You are striving and driven but not from a position of bondage but from a position of freedom.  The yoke of obedience to Christ is a yoke of joy and true purpose.  You are not ultimately ruled by those over you, or the bills that always come, or the definition of worldly success.  You are ruled by a loving Shepherd who always leads you down paths of righteousness that are for his glory and your liberty.  You join Isaiah in the noble and glorious tasks of rescuing and helping people see those truths lived out in your life.

In fact, we have blessings that even Isaiah did not have.  We do not simply have the Spirit of the Lord God upon us; we have the Spirit of the Lord God living in us.  His indwelling presence transforms our daily mundane lives into lives of eternal purpose and mission.  Today is a day filled with the opportunity to bring good news to the poor, to bind up the broken hearted…you get the idea.  But, like yesterday, maybe you just went to work to pay the bills.  Let me encourage you to open your eyes.  Not just to the great mission that God has given us but ask him to allow you to see the poor, the broken hearted, the captive, the imprisoned, and those who are mourning.  Often our problem isn’t that we have forgotten our mission but that we have closed our eyes to those whom God has placed in front of us.  We go to work and immediately join with those who will make our day brighter or easier or smoother.  We go to the store and we keep our eyes down and we make it our mission to get what we need and get out of the store.  Maybe we need to start lifting our eyes and asking God to allow us to see with his eyes.  To see those how are in need and who would inconvenience us and take our time but who will also allow us to fulfill our mission and bring him great glory.  We could then rejoice that our day was so much bigger than simply going to work.
