Vile

Every once in a while God pulls back the shields we build to cover our sin and allows us to see what he sees.  Those brief looks into the face of sin are heartbreaking and should be life altering.  In the past few days there have been several videos released on the internet that show the selling of aborted baby body parts for research.  The negotiations take place at a business lunch.  Price is negotiated as well as techniques discussed that can be used in order to insure more intact body parts.  The more intact the body…the better the price.  The videos rip back the veil of words such as “choice” and “woman’s rights”.  The videos show us what God sees all the time.  As I finished watching the videos, I found that I had no words to say and could only sit with my heavenly Father for a few minutes in a silence that communicated the heartbreak we were both feeling.  How anyone can watch those videos and not be devastated is beyond me.

There is a judgment day coming.  “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.” (II Cor 5:10)  There will be justice for all of those aborted babies.  This kind of evil cannot continue forever and in God’s perfect timing, justice will reign.  Until then, we must fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.  “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute.  Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.”  (Prov 31:8, 9)  We open our mouths and call these things for what they are…they are evil and vile.  We allow God to give us glimpses of how he sees things so that we are not swept away with fancy rhetoric or ungodly arguments.  May our hearts be as broken as God’s heart is about sin.

There is grace for my sin.  I am disgusted by the sins depicted in these videos but God is disgusted with all sin…my sin included.  Yet, he sent his son Jesus to take that sin upon himself so that I could stand in the righteousness of Almighty God.  Part of my quietness before God today was the recognition of the vileness of my sin.  How could God not only forgive me but also choose to pay the penalty for that sin?  How could he love me enough to choose to give me life?  How could he show me such grace while seeing such evil?  I saw the video and reacted as James and John did and wanted to call down fire from heaven to consume such workers of iniquity.  Yet God shows patience and mercy.  He offers love and forgiveness to sinners such as me.  Yes, judgment will come but just like with my life and my sin, he can choose to show mercy, forgiveness and grace.  Amazing love, how can it be?
