Time for Another Reminder

Mother’s Day is this Sunday.  If I were to remind you of this special day and tell you not to forget to send a card or to call your mom you would not be offended.  You would think it was nice of me to remind you about May 11th.  But…if I was to encourage you to remember your mother you might be a little more offended.  How could we forget our mom?  She was there from the beginning of our lives and will continue to be with us in our thoughts and actions.  You might think it insulting that I thought so less of you that I thought I needed to remind you to remember your mom.

God, though, often tells us to remember him.  He often tells us to remember the Lord Jesus and what he accomplished on the cross.  He even instituted a ceremony, the Lord’s Supper, to remind us of what Jesus did.  Do you find that insulting or do you find that informative?  God, who is our creator and knows us better than anyone, thought it good to remind us to remember him and the work of his son.  Maybe he knows something about us that we are negligent to admit…we often forget to live by the truths of Jesus that we say are the most important truths in our lives.

Take some time to read II Peter 2:3-15 today.  Notice that in Peter’s encouragement to put on good godly qualities he says that the failure to do so is due to a failure to remember that we were cleansed from our former sins (II Peter 2:9).  He then encourages us, those who have seen a dip in these qualities in our lives, to confirm our calling and our election.  Review the truths of the gospel, know them, make sure of them in your life, and then what happens?  These qualities will become real in your life as you go back to the cross and allow the reality of your new life in Christ to change who you are once again.  The truth is that we do not forget as much as we fail to allow these truths to continually change us and drive our lives.

So I have reminded you before; and, Lord willing, I will continue to remind you…remember the cross today.  Allow those truths to be your focus today.  Fix your eyes on Jesus and not on life and your new life in Christ will shine through.
