Thank You Jesus

Thank You Jesus  Sometimes Jesus just surprises you. His love and compassion are so pure that it often takes us several looks to really see it. In Mark 4:24-34, Jesus is pressing his way through a very dense crowd. He is on his way to the house of Jairus to heal his little girl. Time is of the essence as the 12-year-old girl is at the point of death. As he is pressing through the crowd, a woman who has suffered from bleeding for 12 years (wonder what the double 12 means?) reaches out and touches his garment. She believed that if she could just touch Jesus, then she would be made well. This woman was taking a huge chance. She was not supposed to be around people. She was supposed to stay on the outskirts of the city because she was unclean. If she came into physical contact with anyone, they would be made unclean. She was not only being disobedient by being near so many people, but she touched Jesus. Jesus stops and asks who touched him. He knows when someone touches him in faith. The disciples think Jesus is wasting his time as hundreds have touched him. But Jesus insists and asks the person to come forward. The woman knew that Jesus was talking about her because she was immediately healed. She came forward but was full of fear and was shaking all over. Jesus confirmed her faith, forgave her of any wrongdoing, and sent her home healed.

Of course, it is simply an amazing story of the power of God. But do not miss the great compassion of Jesus. Why did he call her out and make her come forward? Why didn’t he just go on his way? He called her forward because she had been an outcast for 12 years. She was not part of the group. She was shamed and unclean. His pronouncement to her declared her clean and ready to be accepted back into the group. She was able to go home in peace. She was now able to hug her family and friends. He knew that physical healing was important but he also knew her greater need and he removed her shame.

Jesus also did something else. Do you remember where Jesus was going? He was going to Jairus’s house to heal his daughter. Actually, by now he was going to raise her from the dead. Let me quote to you exactly what Jesus said to the woman with the bleeding issue. “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” Did you catch it? He called her “daughter”. He was demonstrating his infinite love and compassion for this woman. He was shouting to us, who so readily can understand the feelings Jarius must have been feeling, that his love and compassion for those hurting is just as great. She was his daughter. He felt for her what Jarius was feeling for his daughter. He will never turn us away when we turn to him by faith. If he chooses not to heal us, right now, it is not because he does not care. It is for our good and his glory.

So much is conveyed in that one word, “daughter”. It is easy to miss. I know I missed it for a very long time. May God continue to open our eyes to his infinite love and compassion that he has for us.
