I've Got the Joy

I’ve Got the Joy

A while back a man named Robert Fulgham wrote a book entitled, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.  I was thinking about that the other day as God brought into my mind some of the songs I used to sing as a child.  Maybe they will be an encouragement to you as well:

1)  “Jesus Love Me” – What a great song and what great theology. Jesus loves me is one of the most encouraging statements ever given. I love the truth that we can know that Jesus loves us because that is what the Bible tells me is so.  We tend to look at our circumstances to determine if Jesus loves us but the truth is that we know he loves us because it is in the Bible.  Add to that truth the wonderful statement in Romans 8:38,39 (a song I used to sing with my youth groups) that nothing shall be able to separate me from that love and my day is brighter already.

2)  “I’ve Got the Joy” – This is the song that got caught in my head and I began to think about how massive the teachings were in that little song.  The word I got stuck on was “the”.  There is a specific joy, it is a foreign object and it is stuck way down in my heart or the deep places of my soul.  That means in the darkest night or the deepest valley I am able to tap into this joy. John 15:11 quotes Jesus, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full”.  Jesus was teaching about abiding in the vine.  He was speaking about union with him and would later add how the Holy Spirit would come and dwell with us to be his presence with us.  The truth of my abiding in Christ is the joy that I have.  That truth is made real by the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit.  I really do have the joy of Jesus in my heart.

3) “I Will Make You Fishers of Men” – “This Little Light of Mine” – Sometimes we struggle with the wrong things.   For instance, we might say that we are really bummed.  No joy.  So we struggle trying to enjoy the things that we used to enjoy but really have no interest in anymore.  Truth is that you have joy in your heart and if you would turn to Christ and abide in him you would find the joy that he has already given to you.  Sharing Christ and being a witness for Christ is sometimes hard for us.  We feel guilty when we hear a message about witnessing and we struggle to become a witness for the kingdom.  Truth is that we have already been made fishers of men by Christ.  He has made us ambassadors.  We do not have to work at becoming what he has already made us.  We just have to stop hiding our lights under a bushel.  Just live who you really are in front of people and God will use your light to shine in their darkness and for some it will act as a lure and they will be hooked (how is that for getting all the metaphors in place).  Christ has done the work already.  He has made you a fisherman.  You just need to put the bait in the water.

There are a few more songs rattling around in my head (once you get started you can’t seem to stop) but I think you get the idea.  As you remember those songs take the time to thank God for all of those Sunday School teachers and VBS workers who took the time to teach you those songs.

“Thank you Lord for Saving My Soul”… “I’m going to Heaven, Can’t Wait”… “The Lord told Noah to Build Him an Arky, Arky”…
