Fight!!

Fight!!

I was reading in the book of Nehemiah and I was struck by this verse:  “Do not be afraid of them.  Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes” Nehemiah 4:14.  Unfortunately, I must watch too many movies because all that I could picture in my mind was Mel Gibson in Braveheart giving his speech on horseback before his men.  What startled me just a little bit was how much this verse moved my heart.  I wondered if it was because God has implanted on my heart this desire to protect my loved ones and my possessions?  I cannot speak for women (because I am not one and I have not, as of yet, asked them about a verse like this) but as a man this kind of verse stirs my heart.  Standing side by side with my brother in Christ, rebuilding the walls of my home town, tired of living in fear, trowel in one hand, spear in the other, knowing that God is on my side, fighting for the future of my children, protecting my wife…it is hard not to get fired up.

It is why I am so in love with the church of God.  It is exactly how I picture the church. Each Sunday we stand in the midst of a hostile community and we proclaim the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.  We shout his name in music, we preach from his Word, we give of our money as a testimony of his great grace, and we love each other in such a way that others may see his great love.  We do so as part of the great battle that is being fought for the lives of our children and families.  We meet each week to remember our great and awesome God. We need reminders, every day, that he is the one who has gone before us and has won the war so that we can fight in his power the battles that still remain.  I personally spend time each day in communication with God through his word and prayer.  I seek his strength and wisdom to battle wisely for my family.  I rely on brothers in Christ for support and strength.  I rejoice that each day, even in the midst of such great opposition, the kingdom of God is advancing and prevailing.  I do all of this side by side with my brothers and sisters of the church of God.

It is sad to see, at times, men who strike out on their own and begin to build their own walls. They do not lead their families in the work of the kingdom but are trying to build their own little kingdoms.  It is sad to see the weakness of their efforts.  We watch his life and we see the enemy approaching. We call for him to come back to the church.  Come back to the family so that we can offer support.  They fight alone.  They often are fighting the wrong enemy.  Their children are injured and often taken by the enemy.  Rather than remembering a great and awesome God they think of God as a cruel task master who will not give them what they want.  They become a casualty rather than warrior.

This week you are not simply going to work.  You are not simply going to church.  You are not simply reading your Bible.  You are remembering the great and awesome God.  That is the first and most important step in battle.  You are fighting for your children and your wife.  You are involved in the advancement of the kingdom of God.  You are standing in the midst of your community as a beacon of light.  Do not be afraid of the enemy.  Our God is great and awesome.  Be ready to fight for your family and homes.  The enemy is sneaky.  He tries to infiltrate your home through almost anything electronic.  He is in the books your children read for school.  He loves to try and tire you out at work so that the recliner and clicker look better than the Word of God and time with your children.  The enemy is sneaky, cunning, and ruthless; but, remember, our God is great and awesome.  So, stand up and fight for your family.  Sing loud in church.  Use your gifts.  Love the preaching of the Word in the midst of your community.  Call and encourage a brother.  Say no to your children and give them something eternal that is far more exciting.  Only have eyes for your wife and treat her special.  Go spend some time with some Christian men and when you talk of the enemy, remember your God is great and awesome.  Let us fight.  But…let’s leave the lifting of the kilts and the mooning of the enemy to Ben Wallace and the Scots!
