Family

During this election year I have listened as many of my friends and fellow believers have lamented how they have felt stuck with a candidate. They are frustrated and wish they had other alternatives but they feel that to vote for a third party candidate would be equal to throwing their vote away. I realize that this idea of throwing your vote away is open to a good debate but in 2016 many truly believe that no third party candidate really has a chance for election. All that debate is for another type of blog. What I have found interesting is that because they feel they are stuck with a candidate I find them working really hard to find the candidate’s good qualities. Even if there are some amazingly large bad qualities that are obvious in their candidate they work very hard to minimize those and emphasize the good qualities they can find. At times, it seems as if they are trying more to convince themselves than the person they are speaking with. When someone speaks to the bad stuff about their candidate they immediately try to outweigh those things with a number of good things. It really is kind of interesting to watch.

I wonder of this is why God calls us to be a family? Friends drift apart. Co-workers are for a specific purpose. Family, though, should be forever. You are stuck with family. Since we are stuck with family we should work really hard to emphasize the good that God is doing in their lives and work hard to minimize the lesser points. It is not that we should simply put our head in the sand and ignore what is wrong but we should allow our love to cover many things and address the negative when it is harming that person.

What should amaze us is how hard this is for us to do. We seem to drift toward the negative in people’s lives. We allow that to define them more than we allow the positive things God is doing to be what shapes our perspective of them. It is similar to when someone has a zit on their nose. We fail to see the 99.9% of their body that does not have a zit and we stare right at that 2 centimeter red spot. If you are like my friends, they do not say more than two words to me before they point out what I obviously already know. How come we so readily see what is wrong but so easily overlook what is right? I have never had anyone say to me, “Hey you’re looking good…no zits!” but one little zit on my nose and five people make it their life’s goal to point it out to me.

So that is what is so amazing about this election cycle. So many folks are working very hard to overlook their candidates flaws. They want to feel good about having to vote for them. Their “stuckness” is bringing out what God has desired in their lives for some time. I Corinthians 13:4-7, “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” God sticks us with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. You do not have a choice. They are your family. Work very hard at seeing the positive work of God in their lives and allow love to cover the negative until it is being harmful to them in such a way that you must lovingly seek their good by pointing out where they need to change. Ask God to give you his heart so that you are able to find it a joy to have such a large family and that, rather than being stuck with them, they are valuable to you and a source of joy…warts and all.
