Easter Gift

Easter Gift In John 20 we have the account of when Jesus first appears to his disciples as a group. They are huddled in a room, maybe the Upper Room, because they were fearful of the Jews. This was not an irrational fear but one well founded upon the fact that the Jews crucified their leader. I am sure that much of the discussion was about how they had backed the wrong horse. They thought Jesus was the Messiah and so they watched as he created turmoil and introduced new ideas while they waited for the day he would rule and reign. When he was crucified it seemed as if their revolt was crushed and they were on the wrong side of the fence. They had scattered when Jesus was arrested and tried and now they would have to flee their home country in order to survive. How long would it be before they heard that knock on the door and they were dragged away to be beaten and stoned?

There is so much to learn from this time in the life of the disciples. Today we just want to think about one gift that Jesus gave the disciples. It is found in John 20:19, “On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them...”. Jesus did not wait for the disciples to get their act together. He did not make them stew in their disbelief for a while. He came and found them in their fear and disbelief and stood right in the middle of them and held out his hands and feet and gave them peace. A peace that passes all understanding that would keep their hearts and mind from fear and anxiety. Jesus took the initiative. He came to them and once again, entered their world to bring to them what only he could bring them.

Please don’t miss that Jesus came right through the locked doors. It does not matter where you are in life. You may have dug a hole for yourself that is so deep that you believe you will never get out of it. You may be in a thick fog of doubt and disbelief. You may have created a huge mess of your life. Jesus can find you and he can penetrate any barrier and he offers the same thing that he offered the disciples, peace. Do you know why he showed the disciples his hands and feet? Certainly it was to verify who he was and allow them to touch him so that they knew he was not a ghost. But it was also to remind the disciples of what he had done. He can offer them peace because he had paid the penalty for their sin. He had appeased the wrath of the Father. He had taken their place on the cross so that his offer of peace would be real and beneficial. There is an old song, Jesus Paid it All. We do not have to continue to strive to pay for a debt that has all ready been covered. You may have dug a deep pit but Jesus can find you and he can extract you from that pit because of his finished work on the cross.

Once the disciples met Jesus in that room they were never the same. They were not afraid anymore. They were not in despair for abandoning Jesus. They were men filled with peace and hope. They were men of courage and purpose and power. Jesus is in the midst of your room of doubt and fear. He is offering the peace that he bought for you on the cross. Accept that peace today.
