Consuming Fire

Consuming Fire

My heart was really moved this past weekend by the choices that were made for music on Sunday. Two songs, in particular, spoke to my heart and we sang them back to back. The first song was, “A Mighty Fortress”. This was not the hymn, which is a great song, but a newer song. Part of the song says this,

Our God is a consuming fire,
A burning holy Flame,
with glory and freedom
Our God is the only righteous judge,
Ruling over us with kindness and wisdom

We will keep our eyes on You
We will keep our eyes on You

A mighty fortress is our God
A sacred refuge is Your Name
Your Kingdom is unshakable
With You forever we will reign

The next song we sang said this:

Draw me close to You
Never let me go
I lay it all down again
To hear You say that I’m Your friend
You are my desire
And no one else will do
‘Cause nothing else can take Your place
To feel the warmth of Your embrace
Help me find a way
Bring me back to You
Bring me back, oh Jesus

What a great reminder in song about our God being a consuming fire yet we find ourselves desiring to be drawn close to him. There is no way we could ever find ourselves desiring to be drawn close to a consuming fire unless God was doing a mighty work in our lives. I thought of many of my friends who are going through times in their lives right now where the glory of God was consuming different parts of who they are. Even though the times are painful and life changing, they still cry out to be drawn even closer to their God. No one runs closer into a fire unless the God of heaven is working mightily in their lives.

Is God consuming you today and burning away that which keeps you from Him? Are you amazed that you still desire to be drawn into Him? Are you amazed that this consuming God is also a mighty refuge? What a mighty God we serve. I am so thankful that I was reminded of that this past Sunday.
